The aurora borealis (in Latin aurora) is, as its name suggests, a natural phenomenon typical of the polar regions. In exceptional cases, however, we have the chance to photograph it, and even to see and observe it with the naked eye from the territory of Slovakia. But only under extraordinary circumstances at maximum solar activity. Then, if a huge cloud of charged gas – plasma breaks off, and therefore in the event of a coronal mass ejection and in clear weather, there is a good chance to see the aurora borealis over the northern horizon in our country as well. We last saw it so beautifully, clearly and colorfully with our naked eyes on November 5, 2023. In the coming years, the chance to observe this phenomenon will be even greater. Solar activity will reach its maximum in 2025.
