Dreamy conditions in the Low Tatras mountains (Slovakia) allowed me to capture this faint glow in the iconic Leo constellation. Counterglow, or gegenschein is a barely visible with the naked eye, so it’s even quite challenge to photograph. I have been waiting for the exact conditions over half of the year. This testifies about the fact, that skies are never the same. Thanks to the higher altitude of 1.740 m above sea level, no airglow, clouds, or dust, and really clear atmosphere, the night offered a beautiful opportuninty to observe and photograph whole zodiacal light and gegenschein itself.
Gegenschein is a part of the zodiacal light and it’s located right opposite the Sun. As the name says, this glow is created by the backward-reflection of the zodiacal light scattered on the interplanetary dust.
